GDANSK, Poland. June 1 (PSN) – Poland were defeated 1:2 (0:1) by the Netherlands in a exhibition match played in Gdansk on Wednesday.
Final score: Poland – Netherlands 1:2
Artur Jedrzejczyk scored the lone goal for the bialo-czerwoni, while the Vincent Janssen and Georginio Wijnaldum fired for the visitors.
There was only one surprise found in the Polish starting line-up, for it now gave fans much food for thought. Eleven days before the first match against Northern Ireland at UEFA EURO 2016, Poland manager Adam Nawalka decided to swap goalkeepers.
Wojciech Szczesny stood between the posts and played in a way that it would not be a shock to anyone if he had just won the number one spot at the expense of Lukasz Fabianski.
The Netherlands showed today how much the Poles really need to improve in some areas, notably in defense. On Janssen’s first goal from the corner for the Dutch the Polish defense did not know quite what to do or handle the 21-year-old striker.
Offense did not fair much better. Once Robert Lewandowski was shut down by the Oranje defense, the Polish attack had trouble creating goal opportunities.
Jedrzejczyk eventually responded with a set piece goal to equalize the game.
Unfortunately, the bialo-czerwoni defense later allowed too much space for Wijnaldum to fire point blank at Szczesny for the game winning goal.
It was on plays like these that a lack of Grzegorz Krychowiak in the Poland roster surely was noticed due to the Sevilla man resting a minor injury.
This loss interrupted a series of five wins in a row for Poland. The Poles will wrap up their training camp with a final exhibition against Lithuania on June 6 in Krakow.
